The Dutch region well-known for growing flower bulbs is untidy at several scale levels. The area is disintegrated, the edges of the villages are often frayed and the architecture, reminiscent of aluminium boxes, seems lazy. The quality can be greatly improved by strengthening the structure by building houses and eliminating or improving the frayed edges.
These so-called ‘leftover areas’ often require customized solutions, but at the same time they uncover possible solutions for more generic problems. The improvement not only affects the local area, but also the surrounding areas, the town and the region.
By not just focusing on building houses but instead taking care of the surroundings, the landscape and the water system, the sustainability improves and the quality of the development increases at the same time.
Based on historical, scenic and spatial qualities, a number of ‘rules’ were put together for the five locations within Sassenheim and Noordwijkerhout. These rules take into account the qualities, opportunities and threats of this specific location. The rules have to do with natural areas, respecting views of the area and emphasizing the infrastructure of canals. The residential area ensures the fixation of a restored future, thus safeguarding the newly obtained quality for inhabitants and the village.
