During one year, Posad was involved in Atelier Almere 2030+ with the purpose of shaping the plan for rapid growth of the city. One of the biggest challenges was to design the A6 highway running through the city, both doubled in size.

The A6 is the main artery running through Almere, serving as a direct connection to Amsterdam. The accessibility of the city is still limited; the capacity of the A6 is insufficient for the fast growth of Almere.
For the challenge of providing 60,000 houses and 100,000 jobs, improving the accessibility – broadening the A6 – is essential. Nevertheless, this vital artery constitutes a great barrier in the city, and when doubled in width will divide the city in two.
The final document describing the studied consequences for the city simultaneously serves as the consultative reaction of Almere to Rijkswaterstaat. The alternative plan incorporates the highway better into the urban area – smaller and more compact – which makes it possible to guide the highway through and by the urban areas and to reduce the inconveniences caused. It also takes into account the underground connections throughout the entire city, which once were agricultural connections but now are fully fledged urban axes. Moreover, the highway will be designed in such a way that it becomes a connecting element; it does not divide the city but rather connects two districts and at the same time creates a third: the Weerwaterzone.
The solutions for the underground connections, the space occupied and the Weerwaterzone show that as a vital artery of the city, the A6 is sustainable without threatening the quality of life in the future.
