The plan to bring Almere and Amsterdam closer together is practically as old – or should we say young – as the city itself. Having studied the Atelier IJmeer, we set out to explore the feasibility of Pampus outside the dikes.

The Masterplan consists of a set of rules and qualities which describe the outer limits of the development outside the dikes. These rules allow for four designs for Pampus. The designs present Pampus as a concept within which several programs for the construction of houses, transport systems and spatial issues can be tested. We took into account the feasibility, surface areas, the incorporation of the necessary program and the required (ecological) quality.
The process in which the different versions of the Masterplan arose was abstract, but at the same time we looked to establish the specific type of housing environments which fit into the new district of Pampus. The types and shapes of these housing environments – plus the spatial qualities – not only influence the success and comfort, but are also essential for the calculation of costs and spatial limiting factors.
The versions that were incorporated into the structural vision “Almere 2030+” form the basis for a design which is capable of shaping this area outside of the dikes: Pampus as the bridge between two cities.
