The jury report:
The jury was very pleased with this submission, which combines a beautifully green bicycle network with an innovative approach to the concept of bicycle stalls. The submission presents a network for the Rotterdam neighbourhood of Pendrecht, which consists of green axes, complemented by an intricate network of so-called’elephant paths’.
The jury highly prizes the concept of the Brik. De Brik is at the axis of the bicycle network, and it combines its function as a bicycle stall with an economical use as kiosk, bicycle repair shop or a greengrocer’s. De Brik functions as a guide or information point about the Dutch bicycle culture. In the evening and at night, the Brik is a robust, vandalism-resistent lighting object which tells you where you are in the area. It is the beacon of the neighbourhood.
Other submissions presented the idea of connecting more than one function to a bicycle stall, but according to the jury it was never as well and beautifully worked out as in this submission. This design, specifically aimed at a school and its surroundings, showed that the contestants had understood the green quality of the neighbourhood.
The jury did not need much time to decide the first-prize winner of the competition for the professionals. Brik combines a sophisticated network of bicycle paths with a network of bicycle stalls, which are more than just that: because of their economical functions they add activities and liveliness to an often monofunctional neighbourhood such as Pendrecht.
